Life In The Fast Lane…

Wow!  Let me begin by saying “hello” to all my faithful blog followers.  I have settled in to living and working in New York City and I am now hoping to regularly blog once again.  Since my last post my life has been in the fast lane in this beautiful, crazy concrete jungle.

New York City - Designerella

My life consists of working, networking, meeting friends, parties, designing and, did I mention, working? Yup! The amazingly fast pace of professional life here in NYC has filled me with energy I thought I never had in me.  My professional experience has grown exponentially by meeting people and discussing new ideas and designs.  But it is the city itself that gives me such energy. It is a city that has a passion for dance, art and design. There is no other place in the world I rather be at this given moment in my life.  Some may say “life is good”;  let me say “life is great dancing in this concrete jungle.”

Vesuvius Day

Today, August 24th, in 79 AD the great volcano Vesuvius exploded killing thousands and burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum with rock, ash and other debris. A couple of years ago I managed to visit Napoli (Naples, Italy) for a short weekend trip. Next to the pizza at Da Michele Pizzeria, hiking to the top of Vesuvius was the highlight of the trip. From the summit you can see the metropolis of Naples, the island of Capri and the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Standing atop of a still active (but thankfully not erupting) volcano is an amazing experience as you stand in awe of the sheer power of nature.

I Heart New York!

Hello from the Big Apple! And Happy Memorial Day! A recent opportunity included travel to New York City. Despite the fast pace of the city, it is a place I will never tire of. New York City is one of the most beautiful, busy, and cultural cities in the world. I captured some of the highlights of my visit to the city and hope you will enjoy.

A stroll through Madison Square Park included viewing some amazing talent. You can feel the energy and art expressions from these magnificent performers. Just like every artist in New York City there is a hunger and thirst to express how much they love art and love living the American dream.

Perhaps the best thing about the city is it allows you to interact with people from all around the world. When visiting the city I had the chance to really meet such wonderful people during my visit. These amazing people included some from my hometown, people from nearby states like Connecticut & New Jersey, a singing Pakistani cab driver, and a great friend from India who I just met on a train. New York City is a wonderful place to explore cultures from all around the world in one small city. I absolutely love New York City and I will always call this place home.

A smile goes a long way…

Norway - Designerella

Hello all!!!  First, I would like to apologize for not posting up any more spectacular moments from my amazing journey around the world.  My journeys have taken me to over 28 countries and many more cities.  Please browse through all my travel postings with the, if I do say so myself, fabulous pictures.  You can scroll down and click on “Older Posts” it will take you all around the world. And a second apology is necessary for taking more than a month off to blog!  It has been way too long…

The overseas travels lasted for almost 8 months, and I had the best time of my life.  It is an opportunity that I hope to experience again someday.  Working, traveling and my experiences overseas had opened my heart and my eyes to some amazing places and to, most of all, amazing people.  There are no words to describe those many amazing moments in my life overseas.

Working on a ship has been both awarding and challenging in many ways.  The most challenging thing for me was saying good-bye to some amazing people.  I have been blessed to become such great friends with people who live on the other side of the world. They have touched my heart in ways that will stay with me forever.  These friends are people from different countries, religions, and cultures that have filled my life with happiness.  Sharing small moments like a simple smile while having wine, to walking in a monsoon warmed my heart and brought me happiness.  Perhaps the biggest lesson of living overseas is that you can open a heart with just a simple smile.

Above is a picture of my wonderful home for the past 8 months. This image was captured during the start of my first voyage in Norway.  Norway is a place that I absolutely loved and must visit again in the near future. As an artist, I chose to share this picture because it shows my home, the mountain symbolizes the height of my challenges that I overcame and the calm sea symbolizes the happiness in my heart.

The Pearl of the Orient

Hong Kong - Designerella

Welcome to Hong Kong, China! Since July 1, 1997 Hong Kong is part of China, before that it was a British colony. I am so excited to be here in China for the first time and to be able to experience one of the world’s most spectacular cities. Hong Kong is very vivid and vibrant with a visual feast of culture.

Hong Kong is a modern metropolis providing amazing panoramic skyline views. One of the best places to overlook the city is from Victoria Peak, or as the local call it simply “the Peak”. Here the view is absolutely breathtaking. Every once in a while you will stumble across something that will remind you that you are in China.

When locals are looking for a place to relax, they head out to Hong Kong’s busiest beach. Here is a capture of the beautiful Repulse Bay. The area has many high-end boutiques and unusual modern architecture.

Hong Kong is over populated and most people live on top of each other. Over seven million people live in this city that is smaller than New York City. Many of the tall buildings are apartment complexes creating a canyon-like feel to the city. Even the roads are stacked atop one another to handle the large volume of people and cars.

There is so much to see in the city of Hong Kong. This is a city I must come back to visit!

Mardi Gras Manila Style

Manila, Philippines - Designerella

Manila is the capital of the Philippines, located on the western shore of Luzon, the country’s largest island, at the mouth of the Pasig River. One of the joys of traveling is seeing how different places celebrate the same holiday. For Mardi Gras in Manila the locals dress in costumes and make-up and perform traditional dances. The Filipinos love to celebrate and they are the most welcoming and happiest people!

Fort Santiago was a dominate structure in colonial Manila. The the tall stone walls are in contrast to the beautiful stonework around the gate. The fort is meant to show the power of the Spanish military. The entire colonial Spanish section of Manila has a wonderful atmosphere. The carvings on doors of the San Agustin are extremely remarkable.

Bali, Indonesia!

Bali, Indonesia- Designerella

Bali is a magical place and the jewel in the crown of Indonesia’s 17,000 islands. It beautiful island paradise where locals engage in their everyday life while tourists come to visit the sweeping beaches and natural wonders. A majority of locals are Hindu which introduces much color, liveliness and compassion into their society. The Balinese dancers are famous for strong and exaggerated movements. This rich and intriguing cultural has really touched my heart. Bali is a place that is commonly seen in movies, but there is a warmth and compassion here that one cannot experience through the screen.

Rice is the most common crop here on the island. Wherever their is open wet fields you can be sure they are filled with rice. Locals still use traditional methods to grow and pick the crop.

One of the jewels of Bali is the Ujung Water Palace. Built in the early 1900s, it was built to house visiting Kings other dignitaries. It sustained severe damage in a 1963 volcanic eruption and a 1976 earthquake. Currently there is restoration being done to bring the palace to its glory. Today it is open for visitors to come explore this Balinese treasure.

A Crocodile’s Life!

Hello again from down under–this time from Darwin, Australia. Traveling requires always being aware of what time it is, from changing clocks for time zones or losing days from crossing the international dateline. But Darwin provides a unique experience. It is one of several places that have time zones that are not on the hour, instead being 1/2 hour different from neighboring time zones.

Australia is known for it unique wildlife and in downtown Darwin there is the Crocosaurus Cove. Complete with an aquarium and reptile exhibit, it houses many of Australia’s native species. In these freshwater tanks you can find Freshwater Sawfish and Whiprays. The whipray is a freshwater cousins to the saltwater stingray.

The real stars are the crocodiles. Here you can watch, feed, swim or even even swim with these creatures. You can also hold baby crocs. Crocodiles differ from their cousins the alligators who I encountered in the Everglades. Just like gators, crocs have powerful jaws and sharp claws.

While I did not swim with the crocs, Crocosaurus Cove provides an excellent, and safe, way to view crocodiles.

Off the northeast coast of Australia are the Whitsunday Islands. As group of 74 islands it provides an excellent location for water enthusiasts. It is perhaps most well known as a great jumping off point for the Great Barrier Reef. The islands are a tropical paradise with beautiful beaches, lush landscapes and stunningly blue water. The beaches are too wonderful not to enjoy. Seemly everyone wants to lay out on the beach and catch some rays while being cooled by sea breeze. And it is easy to see why!

G’day! The third largest city in Australia is Brisbane and it is a wonderful city to explore. It is a pedestrian friendly city even under some light rain showers. It is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. Situated at the mouth of the river Brisbane on the east coast of Australia, it is a great place to enjoy some fresh sushi!
