A Crocodile’s Life!

Hello again from down under–this time from Darwin, Australia. Traveling requires always being aware of what time it is, from changing clocks for time zones or losing days from crossing the international dateline. But Darwin provides a unique experience. It is one of several places that have time zones that are not on the hour, instead being 1/2 hour different from neighboring time zones.

Australia is known for it unique wildlife and in downtown Darwin there is the Crocosaurus Cove. Complete with an aquarium and reptile exhibit, it houses many of Australia’s native species. In these freshwater tanks you can find Freshwater Sawfish and Whiprays. The whipray is a freshwater cousins to the saltwater stingray.

The real stars are the crocodiles. Here you can watch, feed, swim or even even swim with these creatures. You can also hold baby crocs. Crocodiles differ from their cousins the alligators who I encountered in the Everglades. Just like gators, crocs have powerful jaws and sharp claws.

While I did not swim with the crocs, Crocosaurus Cove provides an excellent, and safe, way to view crocodiles.

Off the northeast coast of Australia are the Whitsunday Islands. As group of 74 islands it provides an excellent location for water enthusiasts. It is perhaps most well known as a great jumping off point for the Great Barrier Reef. The islands are a tropical paradise with beautiful beaches, lush landscapes and stunningly blue water. The beaches are too wonderful not to enjoy. Seemly everyone wants to lay out on the beach and catch some rays while being cooled by sea breeze. And it is easy to see why!

G’day! The third largest city in Australia is Brisbane and it is a wonderful city to explore. It is a pedestrian friendly city even under some light rain showers. It is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. Situated at the mouth of the river Brisbane on the east coast of Australia, it is a great place to enjoy some fresh sushi!

Sydney, Australia!

G’day Mate from the land down under!  The city of Sydney, Australia hosted the summer Olympics in 2000.  But many of the icons of the city, including the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the world-famous Opera House, were familiar to us before the games. There are so many attractions from the amazing Sydney Zoo and the surf haven of Bondi Beach. The city stretches along the Sydney Harbor making water an important part of the city and water taxis are a great way to quickly to the next location.

One Australian adventure that is “a must” do is climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The structure is referred to as “the Coat Hanger” by locals. Unfortunately no cameras were allow for our safety and the safety of the cars on the bridge below us. As such the only picture is of the sign as you enter the building before you to climb to the top. Surprisingly despite the pouring rain and 80 mph wind gusts the climb was allowed to proceed, and it was the best experience of my life!  Wearing a special jumpsuit and being securely tied down climbers reach the top of the arch 440 feet above the harbor. Not only is there great views of the city, it is an amazing workout. It is an incredible experience that is highly recommend anyone who is not afraid of heights.
